What an honest SEO engagement looks like in India
If you've talked to two or three SEO agencies in India, you've already noticed the proposals look strangely similar — "audit, on-page, off-page, content, monthly report" — and the retainers can vary by an order of magnitude for what reads like the same scope. Both ends of that range are technically describing real work; the difference is what's actually being shipped. We're going to be unfashionably honest about it here.
A real SEO engagement in 2026 has four parallel tracks: a technical track (making sure Google can crawl, render and trust the site), a content track (writing the things buyers actually search for, in the depth they expect), a credibility track (earning links and citations from sites Google already trusts), and a measurement track (knowing which pages drive revenue, not just impressions). Cheap retainers usually skip two of those four. Expensive retainers usually run all four, but with a senior strategist and writer instead of a junior. The output is the same words on a deck. The result, six months in, is not.
When we run an engagement, we lock the goal up front to one or two outcomes — usually "X qualified organic leads/month within 9 months" or "top-3 ranking on these 6 buyer-intent terms" — and then work backwards through the four tracks. That keeps the calendar honest. If month four is mostly content production, we say so. If month two is a technical migration, we say so. The worst SEO retainers we've replaced are the ones where every month looks the same on the report — and that's because every month was the same template, regardless of what the site actually needed.
